Linking Partial and General Equilibrium Models: A GTAP Application Using TASTE

چکیده
CGE models are utilized for the evaluation of trade policy reforms, yet they are typically highly aggregated, limiting their usefulness to trade negotiators interested in impacts at the tariff line. Partial Equilibrium (PE) models used for disaggregate analysis lack the benefits of an economy-wide analysis required to examine the overall impact of trade policy reforms. This suggests the need for a PE-GE, nested modeling framework to support trade policy analysis. In this paper, we develop a PE model that captures international trade, domestic consumption and output, using CET and CES structures, market clearing conditions and price linkages, nested within the standard GTAP Model. In addition, we extend the welfare decomposition of Huff and Hertel (2001) to this PEGE model to contrast the sources of welfare gain among models. To illustrate the valueadded of this model, we examine the impact of multi-lateral tariff liberalization on the Indian economy, with special focus on the auto sector, using PE, GE and PE-GE models. The PE model does not predict the change in overall size and price level for the industry well, while the GE model underestimates the aggregate welfare gain due to tariff averaging. It also fails to account for the change in industry composition resulting from trade reform. These findings are robust to wide variation in model parameters. We conclude that the linked model is superior to both the GE and PE counterparts. JEL Codes: C68, F13, F14, F17, O53

Reducing unwanted consequences of aggregation in large-scale economic models - a systematic empirical evaluation with the GTAP model
We discuss how to avoid aggregation bias in large-scale global Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models by reducing the need of pre-model aggregation, based on the combination of algorithmic improvements and a filtering approach which removes small transactions. Using large-scale sensitivity analysis, we show the impact of pre-aggregation and filtering on model size, model solution time and ...
متن کاملLiberalization and Capital Accumulation in the GTAP Model
This paper explores trade policy and investment linkages in the GTAP Model. This is done under alternative steady-state closure rules linking trade to consumption, production, and investment, and emphasizing the general equilibrium nature of capital accumulation mechanisms. When policy shocks are capital friendly, induced investment may be greater than suggested by current savings rates. As a r...

Money is a facilitator of economic activities, thus, formatting of economic activity is dependent on the institutionalizing of monetary system. Computable general equilibrium (CGE) models are ubiquitous in energy and environmental economics research. Recent technological advancements in electricity fuels, generation technologies, and environmental policies which target specific generation technologies (e.g., emission regulations) have motivated detailed CGE modeling of the electricity sector. Modeling these issues requires distinct ele...
متن کاملScale Economies and Imperfect Competition in the GTAP Model
The universe of existing CGE models can be divided into 3 broad categories. The first class of models (of which the standard GTAP model is a classic example) emphasizes the static effects of policy related to general equilibrium resource reallocation. The second involves scale economics and imperfect competition and the third involves dynamic accumulation effects. Development of the second clas...
